Dharamsala is renowned as the home of the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan Buddhist leader, and is a popular centre of Buddhism. Dotted with colourful monasteries, it offers tourists a great opportunity to meditate and soak in the serenity and tranquillity of the surroundings
Snowfall in Dharamshala typically occurs during the winter months, from late December to February. The most reliable period for experiencing snowfall is usually in January, when the temperatures drop significantly, and the higher elevations of the Dhauladhar Range are covered in snow.
McLeod Ganj and Dharamsala are often considered as one destination but McLeod Ganj is approximately 500m higher up in the mountain range. This means that McLeod Ganj will always be cooler than Dharamsala which may be a blessing during the summer but the roads are more dangerous during the winter.
Kangra Airport, also known as Gaggal Airport, is the closest civil airport to Dharamshala, at a distance of 15 km. There are flights operating from Kangra Airport to Delhi and Chandigarh.
To adjust to higher altitudes, stay hydrated, avoid alcohol, and give yourself time to acclimate. Symptoms of altitude sickness can be mitigated by taking it slow and resting as needed
