Uttarakhand's Dual Capitals Explained || The Two Capitals of Uttarakhand || Understanding Uttarakhand's Dual Capitals

Uttarakhand has two capitals, each serving different purposes:

  1. Dehradun:

    • Role: Dehradun is the summer capital of Uttarakhand and also serves as the state’s administrative headquarters.
    • Location: It is located in the north-western part of the state, nestled in the Doon Valley between the Ganges and Yamuna rivers.
    • Significance: Dehradun is a major educational and cultural center, known for its picturesque landscapes and pleasant climate. It hosts several important institutions, including the Indian Military Academy and Forest Research Institute.
  2. Gairsain:

    • Role: Gairsain is the winter capital of Uttarakhand. It is also the proposed location for the state’s permanent capital.
    • Location: It is situated in the Chamoli district, in the central part of Uttarakhand.
    • Significance: Gairsain is positioned in a more central location within the state, making it strategically important for administrative convenience and equity. The move to Gairsain reflects efforts to decentralize administrative activities and promote regional development.

The dual-capital arrangement is designed to address the challenges posed by the diverse topography and climate of Uttarakhand.
